Welcome to Normanby School

Kia ora koutou, nau mai, haere mai

A very warm welcome to all students, families and visitors to our school website. Normanby School is a school bursting with enthusiastic children, dedicated and hardworking staff, friendly and involved families and a supportive and committed PTA and Board all working together towards our school mission to
"provide an inclusive environment where positive relationships support lifelong learners".

We are looking forward to a productive year of learning and community participation and engagement in 2024.

We are a semi-rural school just 5 km from Hawera. We generally start the year with 150 students in Years 1 – 6 and this grows to about 180 by December.

Our school has a long history dating back to 1876. Our photo archive has some wonderful images dating back to the early 1900’s and there are logbooks, with the first entry dated March 20 1876, that make interesting reading and reflect the schooling of the era.

At Normanby School we pride ourselves on providing high quality teaching and learning programmes for students in a supportive and caring family-like atmosphere.  Every child matters and we look forward to partnering with families to make a difference to student learning, achievement and wellbeing.

Children are well known by staff, and we place high value on catering for the individual and responding to the individual; not a ‘one size fits all’ approach in dealing with learning and behavioural needs. Students at Normanby School feel like they are part of a team. We have a close community in our school due to our size, nature and location, where mixed aged group interaction is a regular feature of our programmes and break times.

As a learning community we offer a rich and broad curriculum while also ensuring that there is a strong foundation of teaching in literacy and mathematics. Learners with skills and interests in particular areas are catered for through our inquiry learning programme which is provided across all levels of the school. There is also specific support in place for those learners who need an extra boost, through a variety of intervention programmes that we offer.

Our school is a wonderful place full of dedicated teachers, supportive parents and focused, happy and engaged learners. We are excited about continuing our successful journey with you. Please get involved in our school - our success depends on the support and involvement of all stakeholders. We look forward to welcoming you to school events, assemblies, class trips, community meetings and information evenings.

We encourage your involvement as classroom helpers, PTA and Board members, sports coaches and managers, and in contributing to school reviews, surveys and school fundraisers. Most importantly, thank you for your involvement with your child and for having your child/ren prepared for school - spending quality time with them, reading to them, having them at school on time, providing them with healthy snacks, ensuring that their uniforms are named, supporting them with homework, sport and extracurricular activities and for being your child’s number one advocate.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, Engari he toa takitini.

Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

If you are interested in enrolling your child and would like to know more about our school, please feel free to phone and make an appointment.  I am only too happy to meet with you and show you around our school.
