Better start literacy approach - (BSLA)
Kia ora e te whānau!
Ngahere (Rooms 5 and 6) are implementing a new programme called the Better Start Literacy Approach. This approach has been developed in New Zealand by a team of experienced researchers from the University of Canterbury, following years of research on the best ways to support children’s early reading, writing and oral language success.
We are excited to use this programme at Normanby School and look forward to sharing the progress and achievement our tamariki will experience when learning to read and write.
We will be sending home a sheet (like the one below) each Monday which provides detail of what we are learning that week in the classroom. This will help support you to focus on certain vocabulary or letter sounds that your child will be learning at school. The home learning sheet also includes some helpful tips and games you can play at home to make learning to read and write fun!
To learn more, we are hosting a BSLA whānau workshop on Monday 4th April at 7:00pm. We would love to see you there to provide a kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) explanation of Better Start Literacy and answer any questions you may have.
Ngā mihi nui,
Sam Dalley, Shelley Whyte and Jude Sklenars.
